100 questions to assemble a smart and liveable mumbai metropolitan region

effective integration of physical, digital and human systems in the built environment to deliver a sustainable, prosperous and inclusive future for its citizens _ PD 8101:2014 Smart cities - Guide to the role of the planning and development process by British Standards Institute

India needs an ongoing conversation about its cities, SmartCities Mission is one such enabling environment. Irrespective of how much we gripe, the influx of technology into cities is inevitable. Cities are considered melting pots of cultures and promoted as test beds of most new ideas. Therefore, it would be non-intuitive considering all this pressure to resist making it, well, smart. Electricity (introduced after gas, before that it was oil) too faced some problems when it first came about, now we cannot do without it. This could be something similar. A difference with information (which is required for...

98 proposed smart cities 2015

List, cities selected for the first phase of the SmartCities Mission as published in thehindu dated August 28, 2015. Allotment of cities were done as per state. Out of the 100 proposed Jammu & Kashmir has asked for more time to decide on the potential Smart City and 12 cities have been shortlisted from Uttar Pradesh against 13 cities allocated to the State. All city descriptive texts are edited from Wikipedia entries of listed places. Exercise, via listing aims to look at various geographic challenges each of the cities present. Dataset thus enables an overarching reading of probable city types available in the country. This can roughly be categorised as landlocked habitations, coastal areas, planned settlements, hilly areas, historic cities and riverine populations. Thought these types are observed the list doesn’t group as per these categories at this instance due to its preliminary...

mumbai cuttings (snapshots of a city from within, afar and in-between) _
There is no proper way to identify a city. Regulations call for a delineation which for tax purposes organises land into an agglomeration. This is well one method on how a landmass is understood as Greater Mumbai. Rest of what and is a city is left to an imagination. In this identified void locates mumbai cuttings. Largely dependent on search algorithms on the platform and changing guidelines of content compilation the publication is an effort to assemble a strain which is MUMBAI or for that matter BOMBAY. As a rule, to guide editorial both tags are monitored and request for submission also bases itself out of that mandate. All are invited to contribute. Kindly get in touch with the editor via email for any assistance on in publishing here.

mapping apprehensions

SABAH

Towards preparing for the submission for the PLU by the 15th sep, the groups in M-East had met on the 14th August in TISS. The meeting was attended by representatives of gaothans and koliwadas of M-East who raised the issue of boundary mapping and FSI for their gaothans/ koliwadas. Since these issues are not limited to the M-East ward but across the city, we had discussed the possibility of calling for a meeting specifically of representatives of gaothans and koliwadas towards preparing demands for the submission before the 15th.

The meeting has been fixed for 11th September at 6 pm in Rm No. 5 in TISS Main Campus

database curation, draft 02

MVS04-modd-head02_1680.png

What is the status of Indian architecture, design, art and photography today? As a method what are the possibilities that be pursued to locate this climate of production? Who/ what are key individuals/ projects which have significantly contributed to knowledge on things considered Indian? Deriving from this found position what then can be the tentative trajectory for futures in understanding Indian aesthetics?

Indianness of design/ aesthetics in general is an ever looming situation requiring a pertinent address. It’s understood as being introduced in concept post-independence towards pursuit of a national identity. There were and still persist strains of discussions on the subject. Lack of any adequate coherence is due to inconsistent local knowledge on its influencers. Design education in most aspects, an import, a result of which inspiration and references too are imports. It cannot...

CLOG : LANDMARK 2015

CLOG-LANDMARK-BIG.jpg
As our built environment evolves, we must continually decide what is worth keeping. A significant percentage of buildings today—particularly in Western nations—are preserved through imposed guidelines. While there are myriad reasons why a building or site may warrant preservation, being deemed a landmark is one of the most powerful and complicated.

Architecture’s complicated relationship with wider social issues is laid bare through the process of landmarking, in which only one of six criteria—as outlined by the United States National Historic Landmarks program—mentions architectural merit. Furthermore, while structures were previously landmarked after having withstood the test of time, we now consider preserving comparatively young buildings and debate the historical value of unbuilt structures. By designating local, national, and international landmarks and...

clog : information #archive

CLOG explores, from multiple viewpoints and through a variety of means, a single subject particularly relevant to architecture now.

clog-information.jpg

Online press, blogs, tweets, social media, and other digital forums have drastically increased the speed at which architectural imagery is distributed and consumed today. While an unprecedented amount of work is available to the public, the lifespan of any single design or topic has been reduced in the profession’s collective consciousness to a week, an afternoon, a single post-an endlessly changing architecture du jour. In the deluge, excellent projects receive the same fleeting attention as mediocre ones. Meanwhile, mere exposure has taken the place of thoughtful engagement, not to mention a substantive discussion.

CLOG slows things down. Each issue explores, from multiple viewpoints and through a variety of means, a single subject particularly...
