Vasant _ Think beyond band aids: Development’s twin is urbanisation, but this will require complex and systematic planning
N R Narayana Murthy, Swati Ramanathan and Ramesh Ramanathan

We live in a world where economic development and urbanisation are like Siamese twins – we cannot have one without the other. India will be no exception.

Differences in per capita GDP between services (over $8,000), manufacturing (over $6,000) and agriculture (over $1,500), show that even as reforms are required to raise agricultural productivity, millions of jobs will need to move towards services and manufacturing. The changing structure of the labour market is the core engine of rapid urbanisation. India is already past the...

Shweta _ Poor infrastructure common to city’s tony areas and less developed wards
Kunal Purohit, Hindustan Times, Mumbai | Updated: Jun 12, 2016

The recently released development plan (DP) ends up holding a mirror to the city and the crippling lack of infrastructure.
Statistics from the plan reveal how some of the sought-after, prime realty areas are suffering from an acute lack of basic infrastructure. This is common with some of the city’s less-developed areas like Mankhurd, Govandi, Kurla, Kalina.
Hence, even while you continue to shell out hefty amounts to live in these areas, your access to basic amenities and the quality of life you enjoy may continue to be very poor.
From the lofty Malabar Hill and Walkeshwar to the colonial-era layout of Shivaji Park, areas of Dadar, even Worli and the tony Juhu and Andheri (West), most of these areas have severe deficits in infrastructure as...

REVISED DP SKIPS GAOTHANS, KOLIWADA; UPSETS COMMUNITY
By Jyoti Shelar, Mumbai Mirror | Jun 4, 2016

After labelling gaothans and koliwadas as slums in the proposed Development Plan (DP), the civic body has now left out a vast number of these heritage clusters in the revised DP upsetting the East Indian community.

As many as 14 gaothans and seven koliwadas that should have been marked as ‘urban villages’ have been left out of the revised DP highlighting the apathy of the authorities. Among those left out are the popular gaothans in Worli, Pali, Khar, Kurla, Marol, Juhu and Koliwadas in Versova, Mahim, Govandi and Dharavi.

According to community members, the revised DP has marked out 52 gaothans and 22 koliwadas. “We have carried out surveys and learnt that they have left out many important places. It is very surprising that they have left out the most popular ones,” said community...

[draft 03] dp documents archive

Following text tries to answer and react on statements and questions by Kshitij Shah (student - Rachna Sansad/ CEPT pursuing a MArch majoring in Urban Design) for a thesis on Mumbai’s Development Planning process. The project aims to establish a link between the civil society, politics, and media as emerging actors and their impact on the process, and a possible recommendation for the re-articulation of the planning process. Via this reaction the text tries to locate work done on building a city information repository titled mumbaiopendata.org which is developed in this context of the plan mostly as documentation of urban academic research projects.

In this paper, I argue that conventional planning methods are becoming irrelevant in the contemporary city because; the city and the civil society have changed! _ The city doesn’t have a history of (integrated) planning. Most parts of...
