inspiring architectural design in #india

Landscape of design inspiration in the country could be attributed to this selection of locally available popular magazines that monitors trends in architecture, construction and interior design industries. Content accessed from their respective social networks and websites - about - pages present an overview of formats available to those in the profession interested in domain updates. Beyond their intended mandates these publications end up being consumed by a varying demography ranging from banking executives to house wives towards references for discussions on projects or ideas on home accessorizing. Content quality in respect to designs reviewed and editorial themes shifts from what modal standpoint each issue is required for. Most of these are advertisement driven hence at times overbearingly morph with the burdens of meeting financial commitments of sponsors. Consumer centric models focusing on content is definately a minority here and could be considered absent. Those then interested in the magazine as an instrument of inspiration thus do consider in either subscribing to international editions or other forms of access to design updates. The list compiled is positioned to display to a degree the limitations of the sector that has in its presence in the country and the possibilities which could be negotiated owing to the lacuna in place. From the symposium format to in-house frameworks and the periodicity of its dissemination a review of how trends for design in the country is to be monitored beacons for a change.

Spade India #

SPADE India - a periodic journal deliberating design in india

Its been now over two years since the first issue of SPADE was published. We would have liked to print the next one earlier- but it was not completely because of the wont of trying.

Albeit, with what is already alarming irregularity, SPADE intends to persevere at being an egalitarian voice of the discerning architectural community in India.

But this path as was well known is a troubled one.

There are acclaimed colleagues with brilliant research work done, who can’t find a publisher. Existing design media in the country cannot survive any more without reinforcing strong trade partnerships. As a community, we continue to find ways of meeting only when assisted by trade support.
And perhaps most importantly, our lives have little place for anything but that which concerns our professional work, or brings us joy in our personal sphere.

The great Patwant Singh passed away in August 2009; and with him perhaps a legacy of writing about design in the country that he held high for over 50 years.

For over 60 years now, what started as Modern Architectural Research Group (MARG), was in its earlier days, a strong voice for Urbanism and Architecture, is now, while of great value, a journal dedicated to the Arts.
The vacuum in the space of design discussion, debate and criticism has never been so deafening.

It would take a rather confident or a rather blinkered designer to not realize this state and its accompanying dangers; many that already have affected the academic and professional space, in such a great manner, that what could be other ways of thinking , or doing things are all but obliterated.

In is in this atmosphere that we present the second issue of SPADE titles “Reincarnation”

We are selling SPADE for Rs.400/- (plus forwarding costs) till June 15, 2010.

It costs Rs.400/- to print each issue. All other costs, are absorbed, or services have been rendered by many with no expectation of compensation. There is no advertising support in SPADE and we would like to keep it so.
Do support Spade; if possible, with more vigor than you did the last time. Not perhaps because you believe in what it says, or how it says it- but perhaps only because you believe in the idea.

Warm regards,

Aniket Bhagwat
