TEXT

It’s being noted that code is the new literacy mandate and in some form of its understanding be visible in work being done, especially in a design project. The dependency in, out of the box solutions to produce content is more of less passe. Though it seems bit of a fad and work shouldn’t be judged by the tools used to construct them, this research is an investigation to trying to get to know two such tools. Processing and Nodebox are applications selected for review. They are among the popular two used in commonly known condition of generative art. It’s a different position to consider if the kind of work one is trying to produce generative in nature. The pursuit is not directed on the tools themselves but of the skill-set required in its use. Its code if learned what does it actually produce? Is it even possible within a given limited deadline specific scenario [for a code novice] to pick up the applications and get to apply its results as required? In simpler terms how much effort does it take, in comparison between the two - from installation, to understanding the concepts and finally use these applications?

abstract should contain:

LIST

what you set out to do and why (hypothesis and research questions) – to conduct a comparison between processing and nodebox from a beginner’s approach and position its differences

how you did it (methodology) – after consolidation of the defined information blocks on both the applications conduct an analysis of information accessed

what you found (results and conclusions) – processing is in part a programming language, integrated development environment and community while nodebox is a toolbox to produce generative design

recommendations (whether you have any will depend on the type of research project) – based on finding if generative design is the orientation then it’s better to start with nodebox on the other hand if fundamentals of code has some implication in your work then processing is the way forward. Processing is more an enabler of accessing code basics which then leads to design via computation. Nodebox gives you a set of tools with provisions to look at the cogs and eventually if interested get to code.

TEXT

In design exercises, code is one of the other muses to be summoned. Generative design is a byproduct accessed in this knowledge base that produces solutions a resultant of rules imposed. To get acclimatized with the principles and concepts of the stream is in part to look at tools in vogue. Processing and Nodebox are the popular open source contenders. The research is to position what both the two applications are and how do they compete against each other when getting to brass tacks of delivering a job at hand. In method availed, a deliberated constrained reading of material available and extended from their respective websites is used to present a direct review of the offerings. Preliminary findings are Processing is an Integrated Development Environment while Nodebox is a toolbox. For the beginner at least it’s the orientation of choice to pick the products. If its code then processing should be the way to go. Code principles lead you to generative design. On the other hand with Nodebox because there is a tool-set at disposal, product is faster to arrive at with fundamental tinkering. Peeking under the cogs over time gives access to the code environment to experiment.
